Town: Hillsborough

School Name: Caledonia Regional High School Grade 6-12 Technology Team (Roughly 150 students annually in this project)

Project Name: Capacity for Courage STEMpathy Centre - Engage, Empathize, Empower!

  • STEMpathy Centre - Engage, Empathize, Empower! “Capacity for Courage STEMpathy Centre” will connect our rural students with the world as they dialogue with students of many cultures about the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and STEM subject matter.

  • A vibrant global culture at our school can only grow and be maintained once our students experience the world beyond Albert County.

  • Including others’ cultures into our students’ own world-view and expressing our culture to the rest of the world in appropriate ways is the mission. Engineering clubs chatting with engineers in India, Social Studies or Technology classes chatting with Brazilian rainforest communities, etc.

  • Few communities need this outreach more than Hillsborough as the town is nearly 100% homogenous when it comes to cultural aspects.

  • Our students have rarely experienced true cultural differences, and this is a major barrier to their future success with employment and citizenship. Only through experiencing other cultures can students create their own sense of belonging in the world and our school community.
